From the Bench: Engineering the Elegance of the Rose Twilight Necklace

Every now and then, a piece arrives at my workbench that completely reignites my creative spark. This off-white stoneware circle pendant, with its stunning, luminous gold line work, was one of them. It felt so alive and full of radiant energy, but it presented a beautiful challenge: how do I design a chain that softens and elevates the pendant’s elegance without competing with the bold gold illustration?
The answer lay in texture, structural problem-solving, and a little bit of design trial and error.
The Breakthrough: Velvet-Like Weaving & The Accidental Bail
My goal was to find a color palette that felt organic yet luxurious. I chose premium Preciosa Czech seed beads in metallic iris rose and metallic gold. The iris rose beads possess this incredible, deep luster that catches the light so beautifully it almost looks and feels like woven velvet against the skin. It provided the perfect soft contrast to the crisp ceramic pendant.

I began right at the closure connections, building an 8-row flat, 2-column herringbone stitch reinforcement strip. This gave the necklace structural stability where it takes the most tugging. From there, I transitioned into a fluid, non-metal twisted herringbone rope.
Solving the Puzzle: From Flat to Twisted Herringbone
To bridge the gap between the rope and the ceramic art, I hand-wove a custom flat herringbone stitch bail. By adding precise touches of metallic gold beads at the very top of the bail, the entire piece suddenly snapped into harmony. The gold at the top perfectly echoes the gold line work below, seamlessly drawing your eye down to the pendant. The finished 18 1/2-inch twisted herringbone chain feeds smoothly through this custom bail, allowing the entire necklace to contour flawlessly around the collarbone.
A Joy at the Bench
This has honestly been one of the most fulfilling and fun projects I have worked on in a very long time. Seeing a design evolve from a failed first attempt into a flawlessly balanced, hypoallergenic masterpiece is why I love what I do.
The best part? This is just the beginning. I have two more of these gorgeous stoneware pendants waiting on my bench, and I cannot wait to see where the next creative puzzle takes me.
